Why do dogs jump all over us when we walk through the door? Most of us think that this is just your dog being so happy to see you that he can not contain himself. This is only part of the story, because I have met plenty a dog who is truly happy to see owner and stranger alike and be bursting with joy, but this does not explain why they jump. The answer is this when dogs were wolves the way a wolf pup would eat is by one of the elder wolves would go off and make a kill eat the meat and then come back to the den and the pups would run over jump up on the and lick the corners of the mouth of the elder. This would then cause the elder wolf to regurgitate the food and the pups would feast on the partially digested meat. Now this is not to say that your dog is looking for you to regurgitate your lunch. Your dog is jumping to reach the corners of your mouth to greet you in a very subordinate fashion. You do not see a dog that perceives himself as being “dominant” to his owner run over start jumping all over there owner, this dog will appear to be very aloof and standoffish when you come home. Dogs will jump and lick our faces more as an appeasement gesture or a sign or submissiveness rather than an attempt to get your lunch……… SO now that we understand why they are jumping we have to evaluate our treatment plan….. So squeezing paws, kneeing dogs in the chest and yanking on their collar are pretty harsh punishments for a dog that is just trying to tell you that you are the best thing in their world, don’t you think.

Monday, February 8th, 2010MOLLY the diabetic service dog has started to ALERT!
Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009Molly the diabetic service dog has started to alert to her owner that she has a drop in her blood sugar! The truly amazing part about this is that Molly is only 7 months old. We have been training Molly with the scent she has been 8 weeks old. She still has a lot of work to go before she is a fully trained diabetic service dog but she is well on her way. Way to go Molly.

Diabetic service dog in training.
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009Molly is the diabetic service dog that I am training. She is coming along nicely. Her basic obedience has been started and she is being fully socialized. As of now she knows sit, stay, down, come and knows how to follow off leash. She is also learning to identify the scent of the chemical change in a persons body chemistry when their sugar is dropping low. This has all taken place before she is even four months old. She is on her way to being a superb diabetic service dog.

What causes AGGRESSION?
Sunday, July 5th, 2009This question is one of the most popular with clients who are calling me in for cases of aggression. The aggression can be toward other dogs or other people. Today I will focus on the most common cause of aggression, lack of socialization. There is what they call a “sensitive period”, this period is from 3 weeks of age till 13 weeks. This is the key time to introduce your pup to healthy dogs who are good with puppy’s and all types of people including children, it is important to be aware of some of the diseases like parvo and lepto so you can take steps not to expose your pup to these pathogens. Now in the case of a diabetic service dog they must be exposed to all different types of situations where they will have to be confident and calm. When dogs are exposed to people and dogs at this time in their life and have a positive experience it will last their whole life. Not to say that the socialization process stops here, it is a type of training that should never stop. To put things in perspective imagine that you were walking down the street and once in a while you see a member of the same species, but you rarely get to greet them and someone three times the size as you has a collar around your neck and they pull on it so it gets tight every time you see another …….. You would get nasty too. We should be getting our dogs out as much as possible, I know this is hard when your dog does not have good manners so this is why you should provide your dog with an education. Not of just sit, stay, down, come, and heel but teaching good social skills as well, this all starts in that sensitive period and continues for the life of the dog, so get out there with your dog and have fun.

The addition of Molly
Friday, July 3rd, 2009Molly is being trained as a dog that alerts a diabetic when their blood sugar has dropped low. This is such a benefit to anyone who is a type 1 diabetic. The dogs can smell a change in the diabetics body chemistry and then with extensive training will alert them that they should check their sugar.
Molly is a nine week old black lab that I am training for this type of work. When she is done she will not only a life saver but a great dog as well.
House training blues.
Monday, June 8th, 2009
So my 12 week old Labrador Retriever puppy Buddha is doing great. My world no longer revolves around the elimination habits of another species. The best way I have found to train a dog not to go in the house is different than most. Instead of the old method of yelling at the dog when you catch him in the act, try this no more yelling just praise and chicken when he goes outside. Think about it if a dog gets chicken (real chicken) every time and only when he goes to the bathroom outside why would he want to go inside. It takes a little work and dedication but it is crystal clear to your puppy of what is a desired behavior and what is not. So the next time you catch your puppy in the act just look at him with disapproval and cross your arms and say nothing. He will look at you mortified. How come no chicken, how come no praise, they put it together real quick. The old way of yelling at them in mid stream teaches them one thing, don’t relive myself in front of my owner. So many owners complain of finding “gifts” that have been left for them by their dogs hours before and wonder why the dog is doing it. Most owners think it is because of spite of the dog knows he is not suppose to go in the house and that is why he hides to do his business. Well I hope this helps.

I have a new PuPPy!!!
Tuesday, May 12th, 2009So there is a little puppy named Buddha who is sitting at my feet trying to chew my flip flops ![]()
New puppy owners have to realize that puppies need to chew (not on flip flops) because they are teething. A bully stick is one of the healthiest chew toys for dogs of any age, raw hides can cause digestive issues so I personally tend to stay away from them.
He just stole a pen cap, got to go.
